How insurance looks for pipeline contractors
Pipeline contractors lay water, sewer, fuel and process pipelines, from bulk water mains to smaller reticulation. A project may follow a wayleave across farms and roads, and it moves along the route, so the site is never in one place.
Pipelines that carry hazardous contents, or that cross sensitive areas, can attract specialist underwriting. Tell the insurer what the pipeline will carry and where it will run, as early as you can.
Exposures to assess
These scenarios show where the insurance conversation usually becomes specific for this trade. They are exposures to assess with an insurer, not assurances that any policy will respond.
Pipe stored along the route
Hundreds of metres of strung pipe lie unattended for weeks. Review security conditions, damage from vehicles or livestock, and the treatment of materials stored away from a single fenced site.
Hydrostatic testing fails
A section ruptures under test and floods the trench or an adjacent property. Ask how the policy treats testing and commissioning, and whether the damage to the works and to third-party property is addressed.
Crossings under roads, rail and rivers
Boring, jacking or open-cut crossings expose existing infrastructure to damage. Assess how conditions and exclusions apply to work near rail, roads and watercourses.
Landowner and crop damage
Working width, access tracks and spoil heaps damage fields, fences or irrigation. Consider how third-party property damage on private land is dealt with and what wayleave terms require.
Remote sites and theft
Fuel, plant and pipe at isolated locations are exposed to theft. Discuss tracking, guarding and the security conditions on theft cover.
Covers to discuss
| Cover | Why it may matter |
|---|---|
| Contractors All Risk | Addresses the pipeline as it is laid, including materials, testing and the construction period. |
| Public liability | Landowner, road user and utility claims are central on linear projects. |
| Goods in transit | Pipe is transported over long distances and is easily damaged. |
| Plant All Risk | Side-booms, excavators and welding equipment move along the route. |
| Performance guarantees | Municipal and utility employers commonly require security for performance. |

Frequently asked questions
Does the type of pipeline affect insurance?
Yes. Pipelines for sewage, fuel or gas carry different risks from water mains and may need specialist underwriting. Tell us what the pipeline will carry.
Are testing and commissioning covered?
They are a recognised high-risk phase. Ask whether the policy covers testing, whether any conditions apply, and how the policy treats loss caused by the test itself.
